Do Press-On Nails Damage Your Natural Nails?

Press-on nails have exploded in popularity due in part to closures of spas and nail salons but also thanks to the fact that they are no longer the press-on nails of your childhood years. There are styles, sizes, colors and designs to delight any nail-wearer and the quality and durability of press-ons is no longer an issue. As an alternative to traditional acrylic nails, press on nails are more cost effective, easy to apply at home, better for the health of your natural nails, and they look great.

Perhaps one of the biggest questions asked in regards to press-on nails, is do they damage your natural nails? The answer is a resounding no, as long as you follow three important rules.

1. Follow the Proper Application Process

First and foremost, in order to protect your nails while wearing press-on nails you must apply them properly. It truly is a simple process and once you’ve got the hang of the finer details, you’ll be a press-on nail application pro. (Check out our article How to Make Your Volt Pop Press-On Nails Last Longer for our best application tips.) The best part about press-on nail application is that you’ve taken all the chemicals that you would typically be exposed to during a trip to the nail salon out of the equation entirely.

2. Use Non-Damaging Glue

The type of glue you use to apply your press on nails matters. A quality glue makes for an easy application and removal and won’t cause damage to your natural nails in the process. Volt Pop press on nail glue is non-damaging and non-toxic to keep your nails protected while using press-ons. Always use the correct amount of glue, just a drop is more than enough per nail.

3. Remove them Properly

While the application process is a big part in taking care of the health of your real nails, perhaps most important is the removal process. The benefit of press-ons is that you can remove them without the use of acetone, which can cause your natural nails to become dry and flaky. Even so, if you are too harsh or rough with the press on nail removal, you risk inflicting damage to your natural nails. Luckily, following the removal method is easy and you can avoid any unnecessary harm to your nails.

How to Properly Remove Your Volt Press-On Nails

Prepare a bowl of warm water and soak the nails for at least ten minutes to begin to loosen the hold of the glue. Next, gently lift the underside of your Volt Pop nail with the cuticle stick (included in your kit) until the nail pops off. It should pop off quite easily but if it does not, do not force removal as you risk stripping off layers of your nail with it. A bit of patience in the soaking process goes a long way when it comes to protecting your natural nails while using press-ons. You can also add a bit of Nourishing Nail and Cuticle Serum to the bowl or around the side of your cuticles to assist in lifting the glue. Once the nails have been removed you can remove excess glue by gently buffing the top of your nail with a nail file. To complete this process take your Nourishing Nail and Cuticle Serum dropper and dap a drop along each cuticle, massage excess into nails and hands for a beautiful nourished and healthy looking nails.

There are many benefits to using a press-on nails, not the least of which is that your nail health can be in the forefront of your mind. With press-ons, you can have long, beautifully manicured nails without risking the strength and condition of your real nails. In fact, after repeated use of press ons as opposed to traditional acrylics, you might even find that your natural nails look healthier, stronger and thicker than they did before, thanks to the super gentle removal process!
